Eating disorders are complex conditions that don’t receive enough attention in media, medical settings, and marginalized communities. The lack of awareness and resources make eating disorders isolating and alienating experiences. In this new talk, Gloria Lucas shares an honest account of how a Xicana womxn of color struggling with body-image issues and eating disorders was able to seek ancestral guidance as a way to break isolation and find healing. However, Gloria does not claim to be a Xicana healer. Gloria's relationship with spirituality has been fraught with difficulty. Having been raised in an overtly religious home, where parents regularly argued about their religious differences, it took time for Gloria to find her own spiritual path.

Gloria has been able to reclaim a relationship with ancestors and embrace “imperfect spirituality.” Historical trauma has made many individuals feel disconnected and spiritually fragmented. “Imperfect spiritually” is a self-compassionate way of reclaiming practices that feel right for oneself and being content if one's spirituality is not always readily defined. Having Nahuatl and unknown indigenous ancestry, Gloria has incorporated the various interpretive practices of Mexica goddesses as a way to bring healing and strength to those struggling with the effects of historical trauma, poor body-image issues, and eating disorders. In this intimate talk, Gloria shares her interpretations and roles of Tlazolteotl as the goddess of filth and rebirth and Coyolxauhqui the goddess of fragmentation and divinity and how we could integrate them in our healing plans. In addition, Gloria explores the roles of colonialism in the development of eating disorders through histories of shame and guilt. Lastly, Gloria shares her “Ancestral Hotline:” an informal prayer/calling to ancestors in times of hardship. In this new talk, Gloria shares her essential tools for tapping into ancestral guidance that disavows starvation and champions nourishment.
